definition |
Definition: Ataxia is a lack of muscle control or coordination of voluntary movements. It can affect various movements and create difficulties with speech, eye movement, swallowing and gait disorder. Mostly it is the result of damage to the part of the brain that controls muscle coordination, the cerebellum. Many conditions can cause ataxia, including alcohol misuse, certain medication, stroke, tumor, cerebral palsy, brain degeneration and MS, inherited defective genes can also cause ataxia. In the clinical summaries of the NBB, ataxia is mostly noted when it concerns a cerebellar ataxia and observed in neurological examination. We included all cases where the word ‘ataxia’ or words that derive from this word. Furthermore, a wide based gait, wide-based walk or broad-based gait, which often refers to a cerebellar origin, can also be described as atactic gait. |
