A mononuclear phagocyte of the myeloid lineage that is present in a variety of tissues, typically differentiated from monocytes, and capable of phagocytosing a variety of extracellular particulate material, including immune complexes, microorganisms, and dead cells. Additional functions include anitgen presentation and tissue remodeling. This phagocyte is large, highly adhesive cell with abundant cytoplasm, an eccentric nucleus, and irregularly shaped pseuodopods. Contains azurophilic granules, vacuoles and phagosomes. |
