comment |
Mosquitoes can be activated by host cues at any time. Un-fed, resting females of some species will attack at any hour if disturbed in their shelters by intrusion of a host or stimulated by odour from a nearby host. Such opportunistic biting has been observed in nocturnal mosquitoes disturbed by day. The activation step is readily observed in the laboratory but has seldom been described from the field.
