substratum

a SUBSTRATUM is anything that can be the subject of a proposition conveying a piece of the domain knowledge. It has attributes, and is related to other substrata. It can be understood as an object about which relations and attributes are set. They will be distinguished between eachother by considering the kind of denotation they authorise. First of all, if it is an ideal object, its denotation is itself, that is, it is unique. Values are also ideal object, but put under the formal notion of value and not under substratum. Otherwise, its denotation is to be taken amoung a set of object within a reference universe. Secondly, according, to the universe type, we distinguish the physical object (U = material or concrete universe, the one we can touch) and the intentional object (U = thought objects, through which we mentally are in touch with the objects of other universes). These objects are abstract objects, because they are the abstraction of their realisations of denotations in their reference universe. Substrata and relations are formal notions provided by the conceptual graph formalism to express knowledge. It is the way to think of it, i.e. by means of subject - attribute - value or relatum relation relatum judgments.
