A tissue-resident macrophage found in the alveoli (lumen) of the lungs that is repsonsible for the clearance of inhaled particles, microorganisms, and pulmonary surfactant. Ingestion of small inhaled particles results in degradation and presentation of the antigen to immunocompetent cells. These cells are long-lived and self renewing. Marker profile: CD45 pos, CD68 high, F4/80 high, CD11b neg, CD11c high,MCHCII low, CD103 neg (1), CD64 pos and SiglecF high (2). |
