Cryptococcus yeasts are ubiquitous in the environment and are acquired by inhalation. A type of fungal meningitis caused by an encapsulated yeast that belongs to the genus Cryptococcus. Cryptococcus neoformans and Cryptococcus gattii are responsible for the majority of cases of human cryptococcosis.
