A rare but serious paralytic illness that is caused by a nerve toxin that is most often produced by Clostridium botulinum, but also rarely by strains of Clostridium butyricum and Clostridium baratii. There are five types of botulism: foodborne, wound, infant, adult intestinal toxemia (adult intestinal colonization), and iatrogenic.
