Definitions |
Post-translation modifications are defined as 'series of chemical reactions whereby a newly synthesized polypeptide chain is converted to a functional protein. At the genetic point of view, any difference between a functional protein and the linear polypeptide sequence encoded between the initiation and the termination codons of its structural gene can be regarded as a post-translational modification of proteins. [This definition] restricts the meaning of post-translational modification to modifications that involve the making or breaking of covalent bonds.' (Han K.-K., Martinage A., 1992). |
