definition

Definition: Rigidity is a severe state of hypertonia where muscle resistance occurs throughout the entire range of motion of the affected joint independent of velocity. It is frequently associated with lesions of the basal ganglia. In Neurological examination the cog wheel phenomenon indicates rigidity. In the clinical summaries of the NBB, rigidity is frequently reported in cases with Parkinson’s disease or Parkinson plus syndromes.

Exclusion_criteria

We scored as TRUE: Rigidity or cog wheel phenomenon; hypokinetic rigid syndrome*; general stiffness**; plastic tone; plastic hypertonia; plastic hypertonus. Note: hypokinetic rigid syndrome was also scored as ‘Bradykinesia’. Note: When scoring stiffness as TRUE, we only scored if clearly the whole body is affected, otherwise it was NOT scored. We did NOT score: hypertonia or stiffness in a single muscle or body part. We did NOT score: freezing or freezing of gait. These were scored as ‘Bradykinesia’.
