This species is motile by peritrichous flagella, catalase and indole positive, oxidase negative, positive for lysine decarboxylase, and can grow on cefsulodin irgasan novobiocin agar in culture. K. ascorbata is rarely isolated from humans and tends to be pathogenic only in immunocompromised individuals.
