A species of microaerophilic, Gram-negative, straight bacilli assigned to the phylum Proteobacteria This species is motile using a single polar flagellum, non-spore forming, catalase negative, oxidase negative urease negative, indole negative, reduces nitrate and nitrite, but does not hydrolyze casein, starch or esculin. C. rectus, formerly known as Wolinella recta, is a periodontal pathogen causing chronic periodontitis and extraoral abscesses and has been associated with causing intrauterine fetal growth retardation.
