haptoglobin |

Synonyms |
HP zonulin |

Definitions |
Binding free plasma hemoglobin, secreted haptoglobin prevents loss of iron through the kidneys, protects the kidneys from oxidative damage by hemoglobin (Hb), and makes hemoglobin accessible to degradative enzymes. Hp/Hb clearance appears to be mediated by the monocyte/macrophage scavenger receptor CD163. Uncleaved haptoglogin, also known as zonulin, plays a role in intestinal permeability, by allowing intercellular tight junction disassembly, and controlling the equilibrium between tolerance and immunity to non-self antigens. (UniProt) Although homologous to serine proteases, haptoglobin is missing all of the essential catalytic residues; therefore, it has no enzymatic activity. (UniProt)[url:http://purl.obolibrary.org/obo/NCIT_C37962] Haptoglobin (406 aa, ~45 kDa) is encoded by the human HP gene. This protein plays a role in tight junction disassembly, intestinal permeability, heme iron recycling, antimicrobial activity and the regulation of hydrogen peroxide catabolism.
