A granular leukocyte with cytoplasm containing coarse, round granules which can be stained by the dye eosin. Eosinophils contain histamines and other enzymatic proteins, such as esoinophil peroxidase, RNase, DNase, and lipase, as well as plasminogen and major basic protein, which are released by degarnulation following activation. These cells play a specialized role in immunity to parasitic infections, and are the primary inflammatory cells in allergic reactions, such as asthma, hay fever, and hives. |
