Before release, check with ILAE 2014 Should we get rid fo epilepsy syndrome completely? Fischer 2014 It makes little sense to say that someone has an epilepsy syndrome but not epilepsy. If evidence exists for an epilepsy syndrome, then epilepsy may be presumed to be present, even if the risk of subsequent seizures is low. |

ILAE 1989 An epileptic syndrome is an epileptic disorder characterized by a cluster of signs and symptoms customarily occurring together; these include such items as type of seizure, etiology, anatomy, precipitating factors, age of onset, severity, chronicity, diurnal and circadian cycling, and sometimes prognosis. However, in contradistinction to a disease, a syndrome does not necessarily have a common etiology and prognosis. Engel 2006 Epilepsy syndrome: A complex of signs and symptoms that define a unique epilepsy condition with different etiologies. This must involve more than just the seizure type; thus frontal lobe seizures per se, for instance, do not constitute a syndrome (changed concept). Fischer 2014 epilepsy syndrome |
