Definitions |
Cornidovirineae is a subfamily of viruses within the family Coronaviridae, which includes the well-known severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV), Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), and the more recent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) causing virus, SARS-CoV-2. These viruses are enveloped, single-stranded RNA viruses that have a genome size ranging from 26 to 32 kilobases. They have a characteristic club-like spike protein on their surface that binds to host cells and enables the virus to enter and infect them. This subfamily was first proposed in 2020 based on genetic analysis and distinctive features of the virus. The name "Cornidovirineae" is derived from the Latin word "cornu" meaning horn, which refers to the spike-like projections on the virus's surface. Source: Gorbalenya, A. E., Baker, S. C., Baric, R.
