An intense, irrational fear of animals that goes beyond a simple or normal fear. Unlike a common fear, which might be specific to certain animals or situations, zoophobia can cause extreme anxiety or panic at the mere thought or sight of any animal, regardless of its size or perceived threat. The condition is sufficiently severe to result in significant distress or significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning.
