[RADLEX Definition]: Inflammation of the lungs. [MeSH]Pathology. - Pneumonia is inflammation of the airspaces and/or interstitium (eg, due to infection, as in bacterial pneumonia). Infective pneumonia is characterized by exudate resulting in consolidation. The term is also used to refer to a number of noninfectious disorders of the lung parenchyma characterized by varying degrees of inflammation and fibrosis (eg, idiopathic interstitial pneumonias) (5). [Fleischner Society] [NCIt Definition]: An acute, acute and chronic, or chronic inflammation focally or diffusely affecting the lung parenchyma, due to infections (viruses, fungi, mycoplasma, or bacteria), treatment (e.g. radiation), or exposure (inhalation) to chemicals. Symptoms include cough, shortness of breath, fevers, chills, chest pain, headache, sweating, and weakness. [CSP Definition]: Inflammation of the lungs with consolidation and exudation. [MSH Definition]: Infection of the lung often accompanied by inflammation. [HPO Definition]: Inflammation of any part of the lung parenchyma. [HPO:probinson] [NICHD Definition]: A condition resulting from infection in one or both lungs. [NCI-GLOSS Definition]: A severe inflammation of the lungs in which the alveoli (tiny air sacs) are filled with fluid. This may cause a decrease in the amount of oxygen that blood can absorb from air breathed into the lung. Pneumonia is usually caused by infection but may also be caused by radiation therapy, allergy, or irritation of lung tissue by inhaled substances. It may involve part or all of the lungs. |
