Dietary fiber is a molecular entity that may be contained in a food item or dietary supplement that has been ingested by a human, and that is not digestible by human gastrointestinal tract. Chemically, what is commonly called dietary fiber includes non-starch polysaccharides (e.g. cellulose or hemicellulose) and other plant and animal origin such as waxes, chitins, pectins, dextrins, inulin, lignin and oligosaccharides. Commonly used name 'dietary fiber' is actually a misnomer, since many types of so-called dietary fiber are not of fibrous texture, nor they are all chemically polysaccharides (e.g. waxes are esters).
