editorial note

To truly implement these mereotological assertions correctly, we will need to use OWL object properties and OWL versions of the OBO relations such as "contains/is_contained_by", "is_adjacent_to", "intersects_with", etc.. UNION will suffice for now to get the point across, but it's not really establishing a spatial relation per se.

Note that setting this class equal to the union of the three medial lemnisci from each of the foundational brain regions may not imply the meaning we intend. To make such an assertion - A + B + C = D - is to say an instance of a Medial lemniscus is fully defined by the union of an instance of each of one of these three classes. Those three instances combined would fully define in toto a valid instance of medial lemniscus. Setting a necessary & sufficient (i.e., "defining") assertion closes the "open world" assumption for this class. Therefore, no instance that isn't one of those three classes could be a part of a medial lemniscus. We may also need an existential condition to the effect of, "For every Medial lemniscus, it will contain one each of an instance of a medial lemniscus of midbrain, an instance of a medial lemniscus of pons, and an instance of a medial lemniscus of medulla (BB).
