definition |
A cell of the lymphoid lineage that lacks expression of rearranged antigen-specific receptors, existing mainly in non-lymphoid tissues as tissue-resident cells. These cells have physiological functions analogous to helper T cells, while also including the cytotoxic NK cells. They can be divided into 3 groups based on the cytokines they produce: Group 1 (ILC and NK cells) produces type 1 cytokines (IFNgamma and TNF); Group 2 (nuocytes) produces type 2 cytokines (IL-4, -5, -9, and -13); and Group 3 (ILC3 and lymphoid tissue-inducer cells) produces IL-17A and/or IL-22. They play an important role in protective immunity and in the regulation of homeostasis and inflammation. Dysregulation can result in allergic responses (asthma) and autoimmune disease. |
