Nodules appear as compacted masses of bacteria enmeshed wih hemocytes, the whole of which usually becomse infiltrated with the pigment melanin. Many nodules are then walled off under a final layer of hemocytes. Although small infections with bacteria are dealt with through phagocytosis, the response to more overwhelming infections is nodule formation. |
