Definitions
To groom the abdomen, larvae bend themselves into a loop. The body part that is most often cleaned is the spiracular opening of the respiratory siphon. Larvae groom themselves by working their mouthparts over accessible parts of the body surface. After their use in feeding and grooming, the mouthparts themselves need to be cleaned, and structures that serve that function are present at the posterior end of the abdomen of the most larvae.
