In most arthropodes encapsulation is initiated when granular haemocytes degranulate upon contact with foreign bodies, and release components of a phenoloxidase-activating system which adhere to them. Plasmatocytes then enclose the foreign objects within an envelope of hihgly flattened cells which becomes pigmented. |
