Suppurative cholangitis

Definitions
Cholangitis characterized by the presence of numerous polymorphonuclear cells around and within the wall as well as within the lumen of the ducts. This may involve ducts of any size and is occasionally associated with abscess formation (cholangitic abscess). A microbial infection is often for suppurative cholangitis, but the change also occurs in the presence of sterile bile, particularly after bile extravasation. The release of chemokines or cytokines is the likely cause in some cases.
