A mesiodens is not a supernumerary incisor (i.e., it does not have the morphology of an incisor). Rather, it is a conoid, extra tooth located between the maxillary central incisors. Mesiodens is the most common supernumerary tooth. Typically, they are small. They are usually conical in shape but may have heterogeneous forms. Mesiodens may remain unerupted and cause failure of a permanent incisor to erupt. Mesiodens may develop in an inverted position.
