It can bind elastin and fibulin-5 (Zanetti et al. 2004). Emilin1 knockout mice have ultrastructural alterations of the elastic fibers in aorta and skin, abnormal cell morphology and anchorage of endothelial and smooth muscle cells to elastic lamellae, and abnormal elastic fibers in cultured embryonic fibroblasts.
