The organisation of fibrils varies between tissues; in the cornea fibrils are arranged in parallel within layers but layers have different orientations. In articular cartilage, fibrils are arranged in mostly parallel layers (Wess 2005). Interactions between fibrils are thought to be largely mediated by surface-associated macromolecules, such as anionic glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and small leucine-rich proteoglycans such as decorin.
