Definitions

An opening in the skull through which cranial nerve II passes.[MP]. In teleost fishes the opening is wider that in mammals. Due to the longer and deeper shape in mammals, this is usually called the optic canal; sometimes the term optic foramen may be used for the opening of the canal, but here we use this term to denote the entire space together with surrounding bone surface.
