Any of various surgical procedures by which a transgender person's physical appearance and function of their existing sexual characteristics are altered to resemble that socially associated with their identified gender. It is part of a treatment for gender dysphoria in transgender people. Avoid terms which include "sex change" as they are inaccurate (referring to "sex" rather than "gender" and implying a "change" rather than an affirmation of an already present gender identity). Avoid terms which include the word "reassignment" as no reassignment is taking place (assigned sex at birth is still assigned and such procedures are in no way tied to legal reassignment) and it implies that one's gender identity is tied solely to the surgery, rather than an internal representation of self. Use terms like "gender confirmation surgery", "gender-affirming surgery", or "gender-validating surgery" when discussing such procedures, but outside of a clinical context, allow the person to guide discussion about these processes (i.e. it is inappropriate to ask a transgender person if they've "had the surgery" or the like). |
