Tancred 2005 The occipital lobe is involved primarily in the processing and interpretaion of visual information. Structures: Calcarine Sulcus Cuneus Lingual Gyrus Parahippocampal Gyrus Parieto-occipital Sulcus Primary Visual Area Information: The occipital lobe occupies the posterior part of the cerebral hemisphere. Boundaries: On the lateral surface it is located posterior to an imaginary line extending from the parieto-occipital sulcus to the pre-occipital notch. On the medial surface it is bounded posterior to the parieto-occipital fissure and by an imaginary line extending from the splenium of the corpus callosum to the pre-occipital notch. Sulci and Gyri: The medial surface of the occipital lobe is divided into two parts by the calcarine sulcus, a deep groove which extends posteriorly from the parieto-occipital fissure to the posterior pole. The cuneus is the wedge-shaped area which lies between the parieto-occipital fissure and the calcarine sulcus. The inferior bank of the calcarine sulcus is formed by the lingual gyrus, a posterior extension of the parahippocampal gyrus of the temporal lobe. The lateral surface of the occipital lobe is formed by some inconstantly-shaped gyri, which are collectively referred to as the lateral occipital gyri. Functional Areas: The occipital lobe contains the primary visual area of the cortex, which is located around the calcarine sulcus. Only a thin strip of the primary visual cortex is visible on the medial surface of the brain (on either side of the calacarine sulcus) because most of it is buried within the depths of the sulcus.
