hasDefinition | Jitteriness is common in the newborn period, commonly occurring in an otherwise well-appearing infant on the first day of life as a transient, self-limiting finding. Medical causes of jitteriness may include hypocalcemia and neonatal abstinence syndrome. Jitteriness can be distinguished from epileptic seizures as it can be increased when the infant is unwrapped, stimulated, startled or crying, but suppresses when the infant is wrapped or the affected limb is held gently.
