DEFINITION |
An astrocytic tumor with a relatively favorable prognosis (WHO grade II), typically encountered in children and young adults. It has a superficial location in the cerebral hemispheres and involvement of the meninges. Characteristic features include pleomorphic and lipidized cells expressing GFAP and often surrounded by a reticulin network as well as eosinophilic granular bodies. For lesions with significant mitotic activity (5 or more mitoses per 10 HPF) and/or with areas of necrosis, the designation "pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma with anaplastic features" may be used. (WHO)
