DEFINITION | A species of facultatively anaerobic, Gram positive, cocci shaped bacteria in the phylum Firmicutes. This species is catalase positive, oxidase negative, ferments citrate, does not ferment arabinose or melibiose, reduces tetrazolium and is a lactic acid bacteria. E. faecalis is a leading agent of nosocomial infections in humans.
