Physical basis for a disease Toward the end of the nineteenth century the name of a disease came to reflect the type of entity thought to cause it, the so-called etiologic agent, and etiology soon came to be definitive (i.e., to be regarded as essential) for those diseases for which it was known, and diagnostic categories were refined to reflect the view that the character of a disease was determined by the character of its etiologic agent, and etiologic classification became the preferred mode of classification.
