Measurement of the amount of asymmetric dimethylarginine, an arginine derivative that is arginine substituted by two methyl groups, in blood. Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) is a toxic, non-proteinogenic amino acid formed by post-translational modification and is a uremic toxin that inhibits nitric oxide (NO) production. ADMA has two methyl groups bound to one nitrogen of the parental arginine molecule.
