| DesignNote | Interleukin 6 receptor subunit alpha contains an IgC2 domain, 2 FNIII cytokine-binding domains, and a WSXWS motif for protein folding, intracellular transport, and cell-surface receptor binding. A soluble IL6R may be released from the membrane by proteolysis. The IL6R subunit of the IL6 receptor complex binds to the potent pleiotropic cytokine IL6 with low affinity, but does not transduce a signal. Signal activation requires association with IL6ST.
