| DesignNote | COX-1 is known to be present in most tissues as the housekeeper enzyme, maintains normal gastric mucosa and influences kidney function, while COX-2 is inducible by inflammation. They share 60% homology. The expression of Cox-1 is induced by cytokines and mitogens, hence it is likely to play a role in inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. It contains one EGF-like domain. Both isoforms have the same affinity to convert arachidonic acid to prostaglandin. COX-1. Both forms of COX proteins are membrane associated heme proteins containing cyclooxygenase and peroxidase activities. These enzymes are targets of NSAID (Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as aspirin.
