DEFINITION

AN element with atomic symbol Be, atomic number 4, and atomic weight 9.01

DesignNote

A silver-gray, light, strong, high-melting, bivalent, inorganic metallic element that has excellent electrical and thermal conductivity and is resistant to corrosion. Beryllium is mainly used as lightweight construction material for aerospace, defense and nuclear applications as well as in electrical components. Inhalation exposure to beryllium can cause pneumonitis. Prolonged exposure can result in a chronic beryllium disease called berylliosis causing granuloma and fibrosis formation in the lungs. Beryllium is associated with an increased risk of developing lung cancer. (NCI05)
